Is Invisalign® a Good Teeth Straightening Option for Me?: Union Square Dental: General Dentists

Did you have a conversation with your dentist Darling Point about Invisalign being the option for you to straighten your teeth? Have you started treatment with your clear aligner trays? If so, here are a few things you must know about the decision.

  1. What is Invisalign (or Align Technology Inc.)?

Align Technology Inc. makes the famous brand of clear aligner called "Invisalign", which uses advanced 3-D computer imaging technology that allows them to design custom-made transparent plastic trays that fit over teeth that gradually shift teeth into proper alignment. They created this product to be comfortable and less conspicuous than traditional metal braces with brackets and wires.

  1. What are the benefits of Invisalign?

The benefits of Invisalign include: allowing you to straighten your teeth without being too noticeable effectively, so they are less embarrassing. When wearing the aligners, you will have virtually no metal brackets or wires in your mouth. Instead, your orthodontist will give you a set of clear trays; you will put them in your mouth and only take them out to eat and brush your teeth (usually). The trays can be removed for special occasions like weddings, parties, etc. There is less time spent with the dentist and orthodontist than traditional braces that need adjustment almost every month; this could save you time, money, and travel back and forth from their office. Also, when you have Invisalign trays in your mouth, you will feel more confident since the aligners are transparent, so people can't tell that you are wearing them. You can also brush and floss normally when wearing Invisalign trays.

  1. How long does Invisalign take to complete?

The average length of treatment is about a year. Still, it could be longer or shorter depending on how teeth need to move and what kind of problems exist in the mouth, such as crowding, gaps between teeth, deep bites or overbites/underbites (these need to be corrected before straightening). In addition, there may be an additional fee for special circumstances requiring extra appointments with your orthodontist.

  1. Who is a candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign candidates include those with mild to moderate orthodontic problems, especially teenagers and adults. However, if you have severe issues with your teeth alignment, the doctor may need to correct some of them before moving on to straightening them. Your doctor will discuss this with you during your consultation appointment.

  1. How much does it cost?

If the doctor charges by time instead of treatment, it can be about $6500 - $8000 for both upper and lower arches (biting surface) complete sets of aligners. This price excludes follow-up visits and delivery fees if they charge a fee per tray sent to the patient. If the dentist charges per tray, the average price is about $8 for each set of aligners but can be more or less. This price also excludes follow-up visits and shipping costs (if they charge a fee per shipment).

  1. Are there different types of Invisalign?

There are several kinds of Invisalign available, including type 1, which is for patients with mild to moderate spacing/spacing issues; type 2, which is for patients who have teeth that are crowded or protrude out too much; type 3, which is for patients with excessively deep bites where the upper teeth bite into lower gums causing pain and discomfort, and finally type 4 which is designed for treating overbites. Your orthodontist will explain which type is best for you.

  1. How long do I have to wear Invisalign?

You need to wear the aligners for at least 20 hours a day, every day, only when eating and brushing your teeth when you take out the tray; this can vary depending on what your orthodontist says. You need to change the position of your teeth in about 2 weeks or 26 days (about 1/2 inch). There may be an additional fee if you miss appointments, eat incorrectly with trays in your mouth, etc., which varies from office to office.

If you're looking for a long-term solution without metal wires sticking out, then Invisalign is probably best for you. It's a significant investment since it straightens teeth without making them look bulky and noticeable like braces do.
